Understanding the Threats to Marine Life

Every time I descend beneath the ocean’s surface, I am reminded of how fragile and awe-inspiring marine ecosystems truly are. A friend once asked me, "Jackson Laurie, do you ever get tired of diving the same places?" My answer was simple—no, because every dive tells a new story. As a scuba diver, I’ve had the chance to witness stunning coral gardens, schools of vibrant fish, and elusive creatures that many people may never see in their lifetime. But alongside these wonders, I’ve also seen the darker side of our impact—ghost nets strangling reefs, plastic debris drifting through currents, and fish populations struggling to recover from overfishing. The threats facing our oceans are vast, and without urgent action, we risk losing the very life that makes them so extraordinary.

One of the biggest challenges is pollution. Millions of tons of plastic enter the ocean each year, endangering marine creatures that mistake it for food or become entangled in discarded fishing gear. Chemicals from agriculture and industry seep into the water, disrupting delicate marine habitats and leading to harmful algal blooms. Climate change further exacerbates these problems, causing rising sea temperatures and ocean acidification, which weaken coral reefs—the backbone of countless marine ecosystems. When these ecosystems collapse, entire food chains are disrupted, affecting not just sea life but human communities that rely on the ocean for sustenance and economic stability.

The good news is that there are solutions. As divers, ocean lovers, and global citizens, we have a responsibility to act. Supporting organizations focused on marine conservation, reducing single-use plastics, and advocating for stronger environmental policies can all contribute to protecting our oceans. Even small individual actions—like participating in beach clean-ups or making sustainable seafood choices—add up to meaningful change. Every time I dive, I am reminded that the ocean’s future depends on the choices we make today. Let’s ensure that future generations can continue to experience the beauty and mystery of the underwater world.
